The Basin

Lake Basin high in Kings Canyon National Park putting on an incredibly impressive light show in between storms. The monsoons of the Southwest have started to move into The Sierra as part of climate change, providing opportunities that didn't exist before for photographic subjects outside of sunset or sunrise.

Mingos

Laguna Colorado at an elevation of over 12,000 feet in Bolivia provides for other worldly colors and foreign wildlife. Unbothered by the brutal winds and cold the Andean and Lesser Flamingo's forge for their meals that give them their distinctive pink colors.

Sinew Blanco

The geysers of Tatio high in the mountains of the Atacama Desert in Chile provide a Yellowstone type feel. This pool of algae, moss, and other naturally occuring flora that flourishes in the extreme temperatures takes on the feeling of tendons and sinew for me.

New Worlds

The Uyuni Salt Flats in Bolivia evoke feelings of remoteness, vastness, isolation, wonder, and awe. At an average elevation of 12,000 feet they can literally take your breath away. But with the least amount of light pollution in the world and some of the driest air you can see stars and the night sky like you never imagined was possible.

Cholla Delight

The Cholla cactus of the Mojave region of the US is a very sticky character. They easily detach from their base and can barb into all parts of your body, gear, shoes. But as the sun sets or rises, they glow and come alive!

Chasing a Dream

Certain things you want to experience in life more than others. For me, being in Yosemite after a big storm was one of them. Previous trips were foiled by rain and warmer temperatures. But not this time! Truly it felt like a winter wonderland.

Tiny Worlds

The Canadian Rockies remain a favorite place of mine for obvious reasons, but also for less obvious ones. Using the distortion effect of my wide angle lens, I was able to amplify a water puddle as it froze and bring forth a new way of looking at this amazing world.

The Mountain of The People

Literally translated from Spanish as the Mountain of the People. Volcan Licancabur straddles the border between Bolivia and Chile. A visual force that serves as a guidepost or anchor from almost anywhere in the Atacama Desert.

Forces

A walk among the deserts of the Southwestern US highlights more clearly than almost anywhere else the forces at play in our natural world. As minerals interact with wind and water we see different erosion processes that lead to very distinct lines and left behind artifacts.

Hug Light

Light so good that I literally had to hug my photography partner. Alstrom Point at Lake Powell was a rather special place to absorb the grandeur and to really find a sense of place in the vast landscape.

Remote

The Paria River flows through a very isolated part of the US. As we hiked through it we felt that remoteness even as we felt a connection to the landscape. As the Govt limits the number of people and promotes practices to ensure that it feels remote.

Not every night looks like this in CA. Not every scene can be as memorable or as impactful. But on those days when you find yourself in the right pace at the right time you get to witness a little bit of California Gold
